Think back to the last time you sensed someone’s mood even before you spoke, or felt your own mood shift when listening to a certain type of music. We’re all affected by the vibrations around us, and taking command of our own vibe can have a positive impact not only on our own desired outcomes, but the people around us as well. October’s Intuition Salone explored how to do just that.

It’s helpful to understand what’s holding you back when you’ve lost momentum. These are the common reasons for being stuck:

‘Back of the boat’ syndrome

Choosing to watch the place you just left fade away, lamenting about what you didn’t do when you were there (and inhaling exhaust fumes in the process) instead of moving to the front of the boat to catch sight of your next destination.

You are receiving and not giving

There needs to be a balance of give and take. If you fill up on receiving without giving of yourself, you’re likely to stagnate.

You’re triggered by your past wounds

You get distracted by a threat posed by previous experiences instead of focusing on the present.

Worry, doubt or fear

To worry is to meditate on what you do not want. ‘Nuff said.

Attachment and Control

Clinging to something can get you stuck there.

Negative environment and people

We’re very impacted by who and what surrounds us.

The optimal state to be in is flow. This is the experience of being unaware of the passing of time and being fully focused on the task at hand. In every situation, you have the choice to respond with lightness or darkness. As an attempt of protection, the ego has a way of attaching to negative thoughts, giving them a stronger charge. The need to be “right” further builds the negativity, as does judgement. The more the ego can make others the enemy, the better the ego feels.

The risk you’re taking by staying out of flow is canceling out the vibration that will bring you what you want and attracting what you don’t want instead.

Here are ways to raise your vibration:

Be proactive

Create sacred time and space for yourself on a daily basis. Even in a small apartment, a spot by the window or the foot of your bed is enough. Decorate your space with items such as beloved objects from your travels, and take time to be present there – whether simply taking three big breaths or doing a full meditation session. Do this daily and you’ll experience an automatic shift.

Check in

When you’re scattered and don’t know what to focus on, who knows where you’ll end up? Check in to make sure you’re in alignment with your ultimate goals and to assess where you are now and how you’ll get to where you need to be. Ask yourself how you feel and use your feelings as a GPS.

Flip it

Use tools including a morning routine, watching your language, shifting your emotions and using physical movement to flip your vibration to a high frequency.

You snooze, you lose. Creating a happy way to greet the day will set the tone. I love this piece on morning routines.

Watch your language

Stop shoulding all over yourself! Avoid phrases like, “I need, I don’t have, I want to get, I need to get back to where I was with my meditation practice.” This kind of language keeps you in the past and is disempowering. Instead, say “I’m redeveloping my meditation practice. I’m researching and am going to ask around for tips and find two new meditations I like.”


Resisting negative feelings doesn’t work. Instead, think of a time when you felt the opposite, positive feeling. For example, if you feel jealousy, flip it to, “I’m excited for you. Tell me more about how it came about. How do you feel about it?” Realize that you’re not seeking the thing someone else has, but that feeling of having it. Then, focus on your feelings.

Physical movement

Add buffers of space and time between your appointments. Most of us aren’t in the flow when running from thing to thing. After a networking event, make space to follow up with people you met over email and LinkedIn.

Snap out of a bad mood by moving your body. Dance, shake it off, engage in a random act of kindness, or reach out to share something with someone.

Emotions come and go, but we have the choice of which ones we engage with and which ones we decide to shift. And with that shift come the changes you’ve been seeking.
